Career Advice

A career is a journey and not a destination. It is a lifelong process and one that will be added to continually.

Times have changed! The decisions young people have to make will be different to those of their parents and grandparents who mostly chose one career or job for their entire lifetime. It is common now for young people to have several jobs in their life, some of which will involve retraining. Therefore young people need to be comfortable with change and build up a repertoire of skills that can be transferred from one work situation to another.

FOCUS ON:

SKILLS - things you are good at! This may be something in school like Science or English or it may be out of school like cooking the family meal, or keeping the vegetable garden full of fresh food for the table, or waitressing at a local winery cafe.

INTERESTS - what do you like doing in your spare time? Do you play sport, sing in a choir, look after children, or help out at Riding for the Disabled?

VALUES - this is your sense of what is right and wrong for you and how you want to live your life. You get your values from home, family, school and community.

Your skills, interests and values form the basic foundation on which you will make your career choice in the future. So it is important that you start here.
