LONG COURSES
STAR courses are available for students to meet their learning needs (including gifted and talented). Courses are purchased from outside providers and completed through distance learning. The courses are designed to provide a smooth transition from school to further training or directly into employment. These courses assist students to make informed decisions about their schooling and future work or study. Students gain new skills that are appropriate to the workplace, study a more personally relevant curriculum, study "hands-on" programmes. There is no cost to the student for these courses.
It is possible for a student to do a STAR course that takes up a subject line on the timetable and is studied as a normal class. Some examples of courses may be: Equine studies, Agriculture, Tourism, Computing, Sports Training, Childcare and Pre-Health Science.
Students interested in a particular STAR course need to discuss possibilities with Mrs West.
SHORT COURSES
Many tertiary providers offer short STAR courses or Taster Weeks for students to explore tertiary courses or career options through the STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resources) programme. The courses vary in length from a half day to a week. There is no cost for the courses, which are paid for by the Ministry of Education. Students need to make their own transport and accommodation arrangements for any course they attend, if necessary.
To enrol on any of these courses see Mrs Asiamah at Form Time in the Careers Resource Centre.
