English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) specialist teaching provides the ideal learning environment for students to develop their English skills. Trained and qualified ESOL teachers create a productive and happy learning environment for students. If needed, extra support is provided for these students through Learning Support. Students can be given individual learning support on "successmaker," a computer programme which covers spelling, vocabulary and comprehension. For students struggling in a subject, a teacher aide or gap student can sit in with the student, giving individual support. Willing and capable "buddies" are given to international students in all classes also, so they can help the student with any problems or questions they may have in that particular class.
When a new international student arrives at Marlborough Girls' College, an initial assessment determines the number of hours a student needs to spend studying English and at what level. An extensive programme for speakers of other languages is available for girls from every language background.
Classes are as follows:-
Beginner/elementary classes are for 8 hours a week but a student with only a little English would be able to have 12 hours English tuition a week. Students at this level have the opportunity to gain Level One and Two credits towards NCEA.
Intermediate classes are also for 8 hours a week. Students work towards Level One Literary in this course.
Higher Intermediate classes run for 4 hours a week and give students the opportunity to gain Level 3 credits required for University Entrance. This course focuses on academic reading and writing.
Advanced classes run for 4 hours a week and are aimed at students working towards Level Two Literacy which is necessary for University Entrance. This course also focuses on reading and writing.
The ESOL teachers are always willing to help students with other subjects in class or at another arranged time.
Homework is given at each level consisting of reading, diary writing and each student is issued a homework text concentrating on grammar or vocabulary.
If students are wishing to sit an IELTS or TOEFL examination, the ESOL teacher can give the student practice papers.
The ESOL classes are small, (no bigger than 15 students in each class), and so the teacher can work with individual students which is an ideal situation.
Students enjoy ESOL because the work is at their level and they feel relaxed about asking the teacher for help.
We have great success with our international students at Marlborough Girls' College. We build up a close bond with the students and feel proud of their achievements.
