Top Study Tips and Techniques!
November 8, 2024
Preparing for exams can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies you can make study sessions productive and maybe even enjoyable! Here are some practical tips to help you succeed.
1. Create the Right Study Environment
-
Turn off distractions: It’s tempting to check your phone, but consider switching it off while studying to stay focused.
-
Set goals: Each study session should have a purpose. Whether it’s finishing a chapter or reviewing key terms, set a goal and aim to stick to it.
-
Study in small blocks: Research shows that studying in 30-minute chunks with breaks in between boosts focus and helps with memory. Use each break to stretch, get some fresh air, or have a healthy snack.
-
Eat and exercise: A balanced breakfast fuels your brain, and daily exercise boosts your mood and focus.
2. Discover Your Personal Study Style
Everyone learns differently, so try different methods and see what works best for you. Some people thrive in study groups, while others find they work better alone. Our School Library is a great quiet spot if you need a change of scene.
3. Techniques to Try
-
Note-taking and summarising: Start by rewriting and organising your notes, highlighting key points, and summarising main ideas. This keeps everything clear and helps your brain retain information.
-
Active recall and recitation: Go over a section, recite the main points aloud, then hide the page and see if you can remember what you just read. Repeat until you feel confident.
-
Flashcards: Create flashcards with key terms, definitions, or concepts on one side and the answer on the other. Quiz yourself by picking a card and trying to answer. If you know it, move on; if not, review the answer and keep it in rotation until you know it.
-
Mind mapping: Visual learners may find mind maps useful. Start with a central idea and branch out with related topics and subtopics. This helps with understanding relationships between concepts.
-
Online tools like Quizlet: Quizlet allows you to make digital flashcards, practice quizzes, and more, perfect for quick revision on the go.
-
Make posters and fact sheets: Cover your bedroom or bathroom walls with key info you want to remember. Seeing it daily can help reinforce your memory.
-
Teach what you know: Explaining concepts to someone else, like a parent or friend, is a great way to reinforce your own understanding.
-
Practice with past exam papers: Familiarise yourself with the format and types of questions by using past exams available on the NZQA website. Practising real questions is one of the best ways to prepare.
4. Stay Confident and Positive
Most importantly, remember to always believe in yourself. Exams are challenging, but with these tips and techniques, you’re setting yourself up for success. Embrace the process, stay consistent, and do your best.
Good luck!
